Tips for Kauai Car Rentals

Car rental rates from Lihue Airport are pretty typical of rates throughout the Hawaiian Islands. What will change are the taxes and surcharges each location assesses. If you rent a car at the Lihue Airport you’ll notice that the rental car companies who use locations at the airport will have an extra airport tax and surcharge which per day, can add up pretty fast.

Also, if you are under 25 the rental companies in Hawaii charge extra fees for “high risk” drivers. Don’t be surprised when you're $29 a day economy rate ends up really being about $50 a day after taxes and surcharges. Still it's probably cheaper than a taxi, and it's far more convenient than a bus. Kauai is another island where destination resorts and visitor attractions are miles from each other.

If you're staying anywhere other than Kapaa you will pay a hefty price for a taxi to and from the airport. One-way taxi fares from the Lihue Airport to Kapaa are approximately $35 plus tip. Not too bad. But a taxi to Poipu is approximately $50 plus tip, and to Princeville $90 plus tip.

It’s worth it to rent a car. After all, when will you get another chance to see all that the island of Kauai has to offer? Kauai is the smallest of the four major Hawaiian Islands, with only one major highway -- Highway 50. It's the only major road heading north and south so it is impossible to get lost.

Kauai Car Rental Checklist

Familiarize yourself with the workings of the rental car before you leave the lot. This can save you a lot of grief later.

  1. Check for scratches, dings and dents. If the car rental agent is circling your car with a pad takingaking notes, join him/her and do the same. Take pictures with your camera or smartphone to documenti anything serious.
  2. Start the car and let it warm up to assure the car is running smoothly, with no strange noises.
  3. Adjust the mirrors - the rear view as well as the side mirrors. If you're traveling with someone, they can help.
  4. Find the turn signals. This is usually pretty obvious since it is standardized by law.
  5. Find the windshield wipers switch(es). On a tropical island, you're likely to need them at some point.
  6. Locate the headlights switch. Find the on-off switch and figure out the high beams. Later, when you turn the headlights on at dusk, you'll know how to turn the high beams down if necessary.
  7. Locate the Emergency Flashers switch. You'll be glad you did if you have an emergency.
  8. Find and turn on Heater/Air-conditioning to assure that they are woking properly. Even though it's Hawaii, you may need that heater at the top Mt. Haleakala and Mauna Kea.
  9. Figure out the radio. This can be an important step because more accidents are caused by drivers futzing with radio dials than using cell phones.
  10. Find the fuel tank latch. It's also important to determine which side to refill the tank from.
  11. Find the window controls. You'll probably need to roll one down to exit the rental lot.
  12. Consult a map. Most car rental agencies give you a map showing the location of the rental lot.
  13. Plan your route use this map, your smartphone mapping app, or a GPS device if you have added this option.
  14. Check the emergency brake. Release it if it is on.
  15. Put the car in gear and drive toward the exit.

Our guide Tosh was knowledgeable about local ecology and enthusiastic about his job, which is a big plus as this is also part of his hobby. All in all this is the best of all HI tours yet. I learned quite a bit and thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Some of the landscapes were almost surreal, and when it rained, they were even more so as the scenery could change by the minute. I highly recommend the Twilight Volcano tour to just about anyone. >>> Twilight Volcano National Park Adventure, Big Island of Hawaii

Kelly at Hawaii Active was awesome! She was able to make last minute arrangements for us. We are flight crew, so had a limited amount of time, but we had the best layover ever. Thank you so much, Kelly!
